For WATER-BASED paint, how long does it continue giving off fumes AFTER it has dried?

Obviously, there are fumes given off when the paint is wet, but I've heard that fumes continue even after it has dried.

Please be specific and provide the source of your information-- the more credible the source the better.

Thank you

If you use a fan in the room it may take a couple of days to air out. If you just have a couple of doors and windows open for ventilation then it could take a week. The secret to keeping fumes at bay is to use a few drops of Vanilla extract to the gallon of paint before applying. This way you will smell the Vanilla (much more pleasant) then you would the fumes.

am currently using water based varnish around the house and fumes appear to be gone within a day, leaving half an onion in the room apparently neutralise's the smell! not sure why or if just an old wives tale! have tried it!

After about 2 hours. But it is always best, to buy the best paint, especially for inside your home, and always check with your shop, as to how long it takes to dry.

Keep windows and door open while you paint and afterword.
