How come the eyes of a person on a photograph follow you around the room? Is there a scientific explanation for this?

It's partly because we are being tricked by our brains!

When someone looks directly into the camera they look directly at the viewer. The viewer then is tricked by his own brain which tells him/her the eyes are following. Of course photographic eyes can't move.

We are always much more concious of people who look directly back at us.

It has to do with the painter's use of coloration, light and dark(though usually when the face is lighter than the background this illusion of being watched occurs), and even the height of the painting in question. The best painting I have ever seen that displayed this uncanny quality was a large portrait of Abraham Lincoln seated in a chair. The painting must have been(remembering it through a ten year-old's eyes) ten feet tall. This of course does not directly address the central focus of your question since you asked about photographs and not paintings, but the same rules apply. I encourage you to go to a museum and look at some large portraits.

because they are circular in shape
and are staring directly at the camera
plus its the main thing you do when you
talk to someone is look at each others eyes first
sub~consciously,im sure if you look at the person in the pictures nose its direction will be pointing at you whatever angle you are at,but its not something you would instantly recognise because the eyes are the main things we instantly notice

They only follow you if they were looking directly at the lens of the camera.
