What does this quote mean, "life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what your going to get"?

It is common for a box of chocolates (back in the day when they didnt label what you were getting in writting under each piece) that a person would have to pick up a piece and break it apart to find out what was in it. It was a random choice system and you were just happy to be eating chocolate. In fact years ago, in the 1930's, you were lucky to get to eat an orange around Christmas time. What that statement means is that like a box of chocolates, life is a random game of chances and fate. You are never ever really promised anything other than at some point in time the box of chocolates will be empty (we all will die). So be happy with what you get, enjoy life to its fullest extent and remember to be lucky that you have the chance to experience it.

They would all look alike, so a person never knew what they were getting until he bit into it. The best example I can think of are chocolates that have cherries or a cherry filling.
