My husband is from India and I need to explain to him what an 'owl' is. But I don't know the word for it in Hindi or Gujerati.

In Hindi it is called "ullu" and in Gujarati it is "ghoovaD".

OWL - It is called ULLOO or ULLU in North Indian Languages like Hindi and Gujarati-

Owls are a group of birds of prey. Most are solitary and nocturnal, with some exceptions (e.g. the Burrowing Owl). They are classified in the order Strigiformes, in which there are over 200 extant species. Owls mostly hunt small mammals, insects, and other birds, though a few species specialize in hunting fish. Though owls are typically solitary, the literary collective noun for a group of owls is a parliament.--

It should be pronounce as ulloo in hindi. "u" and "oo" is pronounced almost same, but "oo" is little longer
