We do Qurbani to express our gratitude to God, as ritual of Abrahamic religion and as a order of God..Not really for atonement of sins. A true repentance is enough for forgiveness of sins.

NOT FOR ATONEMENT.

If anybody called themselves muslims and still do it, it's not the Islam way it's more their own local culture ( paganism and animism, which is still have influence in some muslim's areas).
Sacrificing for atonement is forbidden in Islamic teaching.

It takes time for old paganism or animism to really /completely fade away in muslims society, but as more and more muslim's scholars willing to share their true knowledge of Islam, I believe very soon Islamic teaching will be purified according to what mention in The Noble Qur'an

No it is not true. All muslims have no obligation for qurban an animal for atonement. We (the capable muslims) have the obligation for slaughtering an animal such as cow or camel for 7 persons or goat/sheep for 1 person. Its meat should be distributed to the poor who can not afford to buy meat. The slaughter is conducted on Idul Adha for this year is on December 20,2007.This date is a commemoration of Ismael the son of Abraham who was instructed by God to be killed but at that moment God saved and replaced him with a goat.God instructed like that for testing the loyalty devotion of Abraham prophet to God Amighty. The atonement of sins should be conducted directly to God by taubatan nasuha.(asking for God's forgiveness on the lonely after mid night praying and vow to our God that would not do the same wrong doing))

No. This is the main concept in Christianity-- Jesus as a Human Sin Sacrifice, But in Islam only Sincere Repentance erases sin. If One Sacrifices an animal FOR Allah and gives it to the poor and the Hungry then that is considered as Charity. But it is not ''Blood for atonement''.

it means that u have to give food or something else to the poor people.nowadays we have many stores where we can find meat etc.. so we don't have to sacrifice any animals. the meaning of this worship is helping other people, not killing an animal. some ignorant people think that God wants us to sacrifice animal for Him, but this is wrong. He only wants us to help poor people.
