the ten commandments were of the old law, yet jesus did not abolish them, he saw that people were "religiously" following them when their heart wasnt in it at all, so he summed them up in two, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, spirit and mind and love one another. If you follow these commandments then you wont have the temptation in your heart to commit the acts that are stated in the ten commandments.
so they still apply, its just that God wants us to follow him whole heartedly and not just be a religious person who thinks they are righteous because they follow the commandements

The idea of Ten commandments was just to get rid of Law of Torah. Commandments means law, each and every law of old testament. Jesus did not come to abandone the law, but fulfill it.

Mat 22:35 Then one of them, [which was] a lawyer, asked [him a question], tempting him, and saying,
Mat 22:36 Master, which [is] the great commandment in the law?
Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

All the laws found in the old testament and not just the ten commandments as the Christian have you believe.
The followers of christ do not follow all the laws in the Bible cos its too much of a uphill struggle, instead they bang on about the love Jesus gives us and his death, open your eyes Jesus never died on the cross, read the Gospel properly with out the horse's blinkers on.

These answers are all pretty much correct and that is good to see. "If you love me, keep my commandments" is the newest, but Christ also said, "Feed my sheep", meaning tell others about His gospel. I guess I'd say you need to read the Bible if you haven't already because there is more than what can be included in a forum like this. People spend their entire lives studying the gospel.

The Commandment to love God with all your heart, mind and soul and to love your neighbor as yourself.
This two great commandments are a summary of the Ten Commandments.
1. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them.
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain
3. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it, you shall not do any work.
4. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
5. You shall not kill.
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.
10. You shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ***, or anything that is your neighbor's.
Somebody gave me a thumbs down. I wonder what that was for.

The Ten Commandments
Jesus did not do away with Moses law, he did away with just the animal sacrificing part
Mathew 5:17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished
