Joseph Smith said that there are men living on the moon who dress like Quakers and live to be nearly 1000 years old. Since he was wrong about the moon, is it safe to trust him regarding the way to Heaven? (The Young Woman's Journal, Vol. 3, pages 263-264. See reprint in Mormonism -- Shadow or Reality? by Jerald and Sandra Tanner, page 4.)

In an 1892 LDS publication under the heading "THE INHABITANTS OF THE MOON," this interesting information is given by Oliver B. Huntington:
"Nearly all the great discoveries of men in the last half century have, in one way or another, either directly or indirectly, contributed to prove Joseph Smith to be a Prophet.
"As far back as 1837, I know that he said the moon was inhabited by men and women the same as this earth, and that they lived to a greater age than we do -- that they live generally to near the age of 1000 years.
"He described the men as averaging near six feet in height, and dressing quite uniformly in something near the Quaker style.

"In my Patriarchal blessing, given by the father of Joseph the Prophet, in Kirtland, 1837, I was told that I should preach the gospel before I was 21 years of age; that I should preach the gospel to the inhabitants upon the islands of the sea, and to the inhabitants of the moon, even the planet you can now behold with your eyes." (The Young Woman's Journal, published by the Young Ladies' Mutual Improvement Associations of Zion, 1892, vol. 3, pp. 263-64)

Heavenly Eyes, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you weren't making a racial slur in that comment. However, I'm quite sure you don't have the manhood it would take to say that to my face. Go change your diaper and go beddy-bye.

Joseph Smith sounds like Charles Russell, making prophecy about things he couldn't possibly know about.
Inspector General: you are still expecting to find 1000 year old quakers on the moon?

So, you don't have any actual quotes from Joseph Smith on the subject? Would you consent to a guilty verdict based on hearsay?
And besides, we have only explored a few lunar locations. We may still find quakers on the moon. Now when they discover 1000 year old men on the moon, you will probably complain that they don't really look like quakers!

This is a case of someone said that someone said that he said it.
But, even IF he did;
1. he never said it was a saving doctrine of the church
2. He was DEFINATELY not the only one who might have believed this. Even some of the very learned men of that day believed that there were, or might be, men on the moon.
Only if he said that GOD told him that there are men on the moon, and that WE must bleieve it to be saved, would we not be able to trust him on any other matter of faith. And that's IF he even said it at all.

i think of everybody is purely undemanding lazy. i certainly had a chum, whose non secular association I won't demonstrate, who stated her pastor/preacher certainly set aside time interior the direction of their church hours to evangelise how depraved the mormons are and that they worship Joseph Smith quite than Jesus Christ or God. So possibly part of the gossip unfold of worshiping President Smith is coming from anti-mormon church leaders, in such that their followers have self belief them and not in any respect "locate Time" to look it up for themselves. additionally, some everybody is purely thickheaded like that.

As pointed out, you have no quote from Joseph Smith himself, however, I would not dispute the possibility. What I would say, is that it does not matter. Any thoughts he might have had with regard to inhabitants of other planets is not central to the Lord's Plan of Salvation or Plan of Happiness - which is central to our doctrine.
To Desiree, and others -- I'm sure my comments will have little affect upon you, but, I have to tell you, that we live in modern society and live as we do, because we see that it works. We recognize improvement in our own lives and situations because we live(or try to live) what we are taught. We give 10% of our income in tithing, but, in the LDS church, you will not find our church leaders living high off the hog with our tithing funds. You will find multi-millions of $'s given to those in need. You will find storehouses ready to serve people (members and non-members alike) across the world when disaster strikes. We are frequently (almost always) among the first responders to disasters such as the Tsunami, Katrina, the recent earthquake in Peru - etc. Amongst our members, you will find a large majority who live honest lives, who care about their families, who give back in their communities, who are hard workers and who are educated and who excel in their fields. You will find mothers who value their children and fathers who take responsibility for their families. Our doctrine teaches us to be good citizens and to make our own judgments regarding policies and to be actively involved as citizens. I do not claim that LDS church members are the only ones with these traits, just that they exist in a large number amongst our members. These are good traits. Most people think we are good people. Why then, is it such a concern that we believe anything that you might consider different? I know people who believe in alien space ships. For most of them, that belief does not affect any of their dealings with me or the world in general. I know people who believe that drinking cows milk is horrible - that it will kill you. Again, their belief has no bearing on me. Truth is truth, and whether I believe it or not - the milk thing will affect me ONLY if it happens to be true. The alien belief will affect me ONLY if it happens to be true.
So again, I wonder - why does it matter what we believe? It will affect you ONLY if it happens to be true. Or, if you happen to be in the next disaster - in which case - I think you'll be glad that we believe as we do.
Best wishes.

He was seeing another planet or who knows a moon around another planet and could not comprehend the vastness of space, therefor he thought it must have been the moon he seen in the vision. Yes its safe to trust him, there is reason I know that it is. I have prayed about it and it has been confirmed to me that he was a true prophet who brought forth the Book of Mormon.

Inspector General exemplifies the typical mind state of the Mormons. They know their religion is based on bullshit, they know they are giving 10% of their income to a bunch of greedy controllers, they know that there are no men who dress like Quakers on the moon....I could go on. The thing that gets me is that these are modern people living in modern societies with access to modern education and knowledge resources and yet they still believe in the most absurd concpets all without the slightest hint of evidence. And it's not just believing;, its sending missionaries out into the wide world to spread the delusion and bring in more power and wealth for the LDS church. Un-freakin-believable.
edit: Serenity - LIES! All LIES! As if the all these good deeds that Mormons apparently do is without strings attached. You might be good at selling bullshit to morons and maybe morons do outnumber the rest of us, but your lies don't convince me.
