my father heard that the m1a that were currently being manufactured were not going to be sold to the public, instead they were going to be sold to the us for soldiers to use in Iraq. can anyone verify this?

The M1a is currently available to the public, while it might see some use by US armed forces it is not likely that any truly significant number would be purchased by the military (any Special Forces or security units that would be rearmed with this weapon are not that large).

It is possible (actually likely in the event of a significant order) that a special run is being done that will be delivered to the US military, but that is a completely different matter from taking those meant for civilian sales and selling them to the military. Transferring an entire batch of civilian purposed weapons to the military would be pointless as the various calibers would cause extreme supply problems wherever they were issued.
