I was brought up as a mainstream Taoist, which have practices like bribing the Heavens.

I was brought up catholic. When the cumulative unsatisfactory answers about christianity totaled more than I could believe to be true, I stopped believing. That happened when I was 9 years old.

I find an amazing "coincidence". Just about the time in life when adolescents are in the process of escaping from parental authority, they also want to escape from the authority of God, e.g. "That happened when I was 9 years old."

i believe there's a higher source but that doesn't mean i must follow catholicism or christianity or islam or any other religion. you're way over generalizing and that makes one question the validity and credibility of your belief from your way of thinking.
