Hello. I'm 35 years old but feel like such a baby right now. I am getting my upper left wisdom tooth extracted in about 9 hours from now. I am so nervous.
I have a prescription for Halcion from the oral surgeon and am supposed to take it one hour before my appointment.
I am nervous about I will feel from this medication. I am also very nervous about the extraction itself. The tooth is not impacted. It's decayed and broken and cannot be saved. The dentist is expecting it to break during the extraction. I am not sure how this affects the procedure. I am so scared of many things from the pain and/or pressure I may feel, to the crunching noises I may hear, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, please don't worry! Upper wisdom teeth are usually much easier to remove than lower ones. You may feel pressure but should not feel any sharp pain...if you do, let your dentist know that you need more local anesthetic. The crunching noises are very common so don't let that part freak you out too much.
I do find it unusual that an oral surgeon is having you take an oral sedative rather than have IV meds, especially if you aren't familiar with how Halcion will effect you. But with any type of sedative or narcotic in your system make sure you have a ride home and don't drive for 24 hours.

Hello~ I'm 20 years old and I got my 2 lower wisdom teeth pulled out three days ago. I cried when I got the shots, and the dentist told me that I'm the only one he's ever seen cry as much as I did. Even the younger kids didn't cry like me. =) (But I'm also very very very scared of needles.)

Well, once you're numb, it does not hurt at all, you can't feel anything. I just had a problem with my overactive imagination and the dentist kept telling some other dentist who was there to watch when he was cutting, what he was doing next, and I had to ask him to stop that because it made me feel like I was in more pain than I was. There's one part where he just grabs the tooth and breaks it. It doesn't hurt at all, you just hear a really loud crunch, so don't worry about that.

When I got home, I was just really sleepy. Take a pain killer before you go to sleep though, or it hurts when you wake up. I ate solid food from the first day, just because I got really hungry. I feel like I've been eating a lot, but I've already lost 5 pounds so.. I don't know, haha. The weird thing is, though, my left side is totally fine (both my teeth required stitches) but my right side is really swollen and hurts still. The dentist seemed to take a lot longer with the right side, so it may just be trauma. Not sure.

Anyway, yeah.. don't get scared, because it's honestly not as bad as you think it will be in your head. I was so scared to get my teeth pulled out and my appointment was just for a cleaning and then he decided to pull 2 teeth as well!! I think I just built up fear in my head that made everything seem worse than it really was, but 3 days after, I'm just glad it's over with. I can't wait to eat lots of food again!!

If the tooth is not impacted, then the extraction of the wisdom tooth should not be that big a problem. I had three of mine pulled out (the fourth never came in). The teeth were not well-formed nor did they have long roots. The extractions were simple procedures and I did not even need stitches afterwards.

Hugs! You aren't being a baby! I hope it will go ny very quick! I had all of my wisdom teeth pulled years ago - I remember it going much faster than expected.. Can you listen to music on headphones during the procedure? That can help drown out the noise! I dont know much about Halcion - I had to take Tylenol w/Codene and it helped the pain & made me tired. Good luck to you!!!

I had my wisdom teeth pulled years ago in my 20's... I had all four and they were impacted ! So the surgeon put me under.. He did give me numbing shots which wasn't too painful and when I woke the teeth were gone.. ! He said he had to break them up.. So, thankfully I was asleep ! The pain wasn't too bad and the pain meds helped A LOT.. Just try to relax and if you can bring some headphones with you if you are NOT sedated... Good luck and it will be fine !
