Edit: Well, I looked it up, apparently Hag's syndrome is another name for sleep paralysis, and one of the symptoms of sleep paralysis is the feeling of a heavy weight on your chest that sometimes manifests as a dream or hallucination of an old hag sitting on your chest. As to why sufferers of dream paralysis have these dreams in common, it is because of this that it is diagnosed as a syndrome, if it were an isolated incident, then it would not be considered a diagnosable sleep disorder. According to Dreamcrowd:

To see a hag in your dream, may represent the "Wise Old Woman" figure and thus refers to nurturance. Negatively, to see a hag in your dream, signifies the devouring mother.

I had this happen to me, I guess, I woke up just in time to see this horrible dark shadowy creature crawl up the side of my bed and onto my torso, it was holding me down, i was unable to move and i tried screaming for my mom, but was unable to make a sound, the pressure was unreal, difficulty breathing and i felt for sure that this thing was evil. Two days later I watched Sylvia Browne on Montel and a woman on the show described the exact same thing. Sylvia said that she had caught herself coming back in from an astral projection, and scared herself, and was resisting, which was where the pressure was coming from. Who knows though. I much prefer this answer to any hag coming after me.
