My roommate and I bought about 10 bananas over a week ago, and they still look as green as they were when we bought them. They don't seem to be rotting or ripening. What does this mean?

They were picked to soon...and they will stay green unless you put them in a brown
bag with an open jar of Vegemite...
Good luck.!!!

Usually it means that the bananas are just not ripe yet. However, I have purchased bananas in a store that I waited to ripen and turn yellow, only to find that they were already ripe and soft, and ready to eat.
I think there are different "species" of bananas that are shipped in from various countries. You may just have a bunch of them. If they feel soft, peel one, and see if it looks ripe. Otherwise, they were just picked too soon off the tree and shipped to the store. Try placing them in a bowl by a window. The sun will help to ripen them faster (I hope!)
That, or you could hire a monkey to test them out for you!

Green Bananas Not Ripening

You can try putting them in a brown paper bag--good for ripening bananas, mangos, and avocados. Are you sure you didn't buy PLANTAINS? They are larger in size and forever green, and actually considered a starch--not a fruit--and you need to cook them to eat them. (And they would be much more expensive too!)

Plantains do turn yellow when ripe, similar to most bananas.

Are you sure that they're bananas? There is a banana type fruit that stays green. I can't recall the name. Eat one, if it tastes good, then they're fine. = )

It means they are not ripe yet. Set them out on the table for a couple days and they should turn yellow.

You've probably, mistakenly purchased plantains. They will stay green until they rot. Then they'll be black.
