First they must come from one of the 4 original sampradayas (disciplic lineages) mentioned in the Scriptures. They must be a pure bonafide representative of one of those pure lines 4.They will not be conditioned by the modes of material nature (goodness, passion or ignorance) They will be purley situated in transcendental goodness. They will only repeat what their spiritual master has said which is in alignment with the Pure Scriptures. They will lead all of their followers to God not accepting any glorification for themselves. Though it is the duty of the disciple's to give all worship to the Guru as if he is God. NOt that he is God, but giving God. The guru never becomes God. God is always God and never has to become God. Guru is the pure ambassador of the spiritual world. But their are some gurus who are not directly ambassadors, but are empowered by the previous acarya. They may not be completely purified yet but they fully follow the process strictly and only teach the above listed. They are also a good guide. The main thing is they don't' change anything of the pure dicilic lineage. Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada is a shaktavesha avatar or empowered representative of God. His word comes directly form God. for info go to harekrishnatemple.com read Bhagavad Gita as it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada

A spiritual guide or teacher is:
All of us.
the greatest I think is life itself.
You see:
What you learn doesn't depend on the teacher - it depends on what you decide to learn of that vast teaching that's already present in your life.
And just a hint:
No need to pay for it - a book with a bit of meditation techniques is of course convenient. The spiritual path is an inner path and nobody but yourself can guide you there.
The teachers is all around you - life, nature, your friends, people you meet, strangers, songs, novels, science, and not to forget inside yourself. - in other words - everywhere.
If you are open minded you will meet the spiritual guides you need - just be alert.
Of course it is always nice to have some like-minded to talk to - so seek the company of those.
I could introduce you to an Yahoo group if you are interested.

It is not as easy, as somebody will lead you to believe that going to an ISKCON centre and asking 'Gita' readers about Gyan and Karma can do the miracle for you.

We have to meet a true 'living' saint, and not some body who has written a purport on Gita. Everybody knows that there is substance in the teachings of Gita and easiest thing in the world is to start 'talking' Bhagwadgita. Lokmanya Tilak wrote the purport in Marathi, Dr. Sarvapalli Radha Krishnan wrote in English. And there are many more who have established themselves, just trying to influence people at large.

I have no real intention of hurting somebody's sentiments, all though it does hurt some people, but I can say with all the humbleness that following disciplic Gurus has no spiritual sense. We need to bow in obeisance to the established faith, but thinking that we can benefit by associating with these 'Lords' is ridiculous.

And reading Bhagwadgita, which Krishn Himself preached to Mahapurush Arjun, can be understood and purported by us, is as ridiculous.

May be today's intelligent and wise ISKCON'ists could give a lecture to Krishn also.

I will advise people to bow to the Bhagwadgita, Bhagwatam and Vedas and Shastras and Puranas as these scriptures are beyond our comprehension just as the God and Saints are. We need to cry out aloud to find a real and living saint, for us to comprehend these scriptures.

I think the philosophy propagated by these kind of adventurists is only to influence the western world. Any body talking of Gita can influence me also, but I know the realities!

I am now ready for the brickbats. I don't like boquets, I like brickbats.

A real "Spiritual guide" is someone that will try to give you the "tools" to seek your own faith and understanding.

A "spirtual guide" will not judge you or try to push you into religious doctrine. He/She will instead wish you to find your own path to "spirituality".

And a "spiritual guide" will not try to "slanderize" the beliefs or teachings of other forms of "Faith", Because a True spiritual guide will know that all doctrines of religion and spirituality have at least some credibility.

Like real best friends. They will make you smile, jealous, angry, happy, cry, and so on. (1)

In this time of living, none likes to be hurt, so people refrain themselves telling the the Truth if the Truth hurts. In returns for making others happy and feel good about themselves, they enjoy receiving money, fame, glory, power, and etc. They will then be addicted to such material things in this material world that they need to justify this addiction. This then lead to the invention of the term of "Stopping the 'karma' cycle."

Namaste
