Yeah, this question has been asked a billion times, but I'm looking for real answers here. Hopefully from atheists themselves.
No, they're not here because they're "confused and searching for answers." That's ridiculous to claim.
No, they're not here because Christians/Muslims/etc are elsewhere. Though it is a problem with the small minority preaching in topics unrelated to religion.
No, I'm not referring to people who are spiritual or follow a religion without a 'god' figure.
No, it's not because they're sick of missionaries knocking on their door. This is the equivelant of them inviting missionaries over for an arguement.
I'm referring to atheists who believe all religion is a waste of time, and that science is the answer for everything. What does it matter what someone else believes? If people wanted to believe magical fairies created the world out of gumdrops, who cares?
I don't preach at others, and neither do many of the other poster, so why preach at us?

And for the record, I would be labelled as agnostic. I was raised in a Christian home but don't believe the religion is correct. I do believe that there is a god of some kind, however.

Fine fine, I will answer.
They're are a few reasons I'm here.
Ok, one night in the general area I saw a question talking about atheist. So, I answered pissed off. I then noticed many questions on Christianity which I answered because I know a lot about Christianity (since I use to be one, or close or something). Anyways, I have been abused for my beliefs, or lack there of throughout my life and I wanted to defend myself.
Secondly, I really do believe that religion does more harm than good in our society on things that matter. I use to get irate about things, but now I don't, I do just let people believe because I can't change their minds. I mean, really, I'm not going to. So, I have eased up a lot and realize it's not my job. However, I'm still going to defend myself.
Third, sometimes as said before I would get irate and yes, it was fun to be a little mean sometimes. I like telling Christians what I think.
Four, I am bored and this is a weird sick outlet for me. I'm working on it.
Five, I like the other atheist here, and dare I say, a lot of the others here too. Pangel especially. And on the opposite side there are people I love to hate but I won't name any names, *cough* fireball *cough* *cough*.
And finally, Six, well I guess, deep down, yes, there is some part of me that is searching to see if maybe, just maybe it's true. Haven't found it and that's fine, but maybe somebody can show me something, something that can convince me. I'm always willing to listen.

I do not know. It's difficult to mention. Some of the matters I learn through atheists on right here appear to head proper along side my factor of view. But different matters do not. I observe that plenty of the atheists on right here say that they began out being raised as a few variety of Christian however then they broke clear of it for a few rationale. I used to be under no circumstances raised with any faith, so I do not proportion their factor of view. I think that my factor of view is extra from the external watching in at these kinds of humans that consider in foolish stuff, and I do not have an understanding of how they are able to potentially consider it. Sometimes I think just like the atheists that had been initially Christians have a form of anger approximately them, like they renounced their faith due to the fact that they did not love it- no longer always due to the fact that they actually do not consider it. Which is the same factor that I can say approximately believers: They consider due to the fact that they prefer the beliefs of the faith, no longer due to the fact that it actually turns out plausible and useful to them. But in any case, the atheists that I accept as true with essentially the most are those that appreciate that religions appear made-up and unrealistic proper at the floor, after which are stuffed with logical flaws whilst checked out nearer, and likewise that religions have such a lot historical past in the back of them that you'll hint again in which those ideals come from and it sort of feels so seen that it is simply old superstition mixed with ridiculous debts of meant magical matters that occurred. So in brief: Yes and no.

I wouldn't even begin to speak for the Atheists, because I respect them! they don't ever change! What they tell you today, will be what they tell you tomorrow! And I think, that they come here for an exchange in ethics! And they can pick up something here and there along the way, or not! It isn't up tp me to say what they get from here! I only know that what I have heard them say is consistent, every time! And you will not get that from christians! Never! Nor do they preach! That's funny! Saying that they preach! I think that occasionally, they will ask a question, just to let you know how dumb it is to always keep asking them dumb questions!
What I have received from Christians, is for them to tear my religion to pieces until there was nothing left! I was heart-broken, and lost! And then. a lovely christian told me that I got exactly what I deserved for being so stupid, as to believe what I did! How is that for compassion? What I believed was not a threat to anyone, but they had to trash it! They are still trashing it, every chance they get!!
Why do I stay, on here? To stick up for the atheists, and to bash the bashers!
As for christians not preaching to atheists? What fantasy land do you live in? There are at least fifty questions on this site everyday, about why don't atheists believe in god! You guys can not stand it that they don't believe! My proof? Here you are!? It seems to me that christians bad-mouth everything except what they perceive to be their credo!

I'm here to answer the questions directed at atheists. I also disagree with you...MANY Christians here proselytize. Why are you here is the better question. What would a fence-sitting agnostic want here? Giving you the benefit of the doubt, you are also here to answer questions...or maybe to learn new insights. Pretty much what I'm here for.
I used to be a Christian...and a Mormon...I studied the Bible for five years. I actually may have some knowledge to impart. I also don't know much about Buddism and Islam. Hopefully I will learn more here.

Some people are pricks who don't have jobs or lives hop on their computer and just piss people off. These are not "true" athiests, these are pricks. Just like if you hop over to the political section and read a question such as "why do Republicans hate America" this was not posted by a democrat it was posted by a prick who has no idea what he's talking about, it's best if you just ignore them. Personally, I blame their parents for not spanking

Simon,
I personally believe that many of the Atheists are here to answer religious questions and to see what intelligence exists in the Religious world. I have met a number of Agnostic and Atheist persons here who are quite brilliant in Scriptural Knowledge but do not necessarily believe in GOD. They are able to answer Book, Chapter, and Verse verbatim and know what they are talking about yet they do not believe that GOD does exist. I have met a number of Christians who are not nearly as knowledgeable. Have a wonderful week.
Thanks,
Eds

Simple answer? It's fun and entertaining. And also because even though atheists may not believe in god or practice religion, it is still an interesting concept. Personally, I am always curious what makes other people believe what they do.

1. If you type "atheist" in the search feature of Y!A, this is where you land.
2. The opposite view of any topic is still a part of the topic. Atheist offer balance.
3. We might actually enjoy reading and answering questions.
4. Theist keep asking us questions.

I don't know unless they are just lonely. Good luck on finding real answers.
Yahoo Answers needs to create two new forums:
1. Christians
2. Atheists
