Cell metabolism is a ***** to understand in a few sentences, but this may help. There are these little cell organs, called mitochondria (look er up if ya must)...they are pretty bizarre. Cell biologists actually believe that they were tiny bacterium that lived codependently with early single cell organisms then became enveloped, haha...and now they're apart of us. They are carried through the mother's gene. So you can basically trace your whole ancestry, this is how they do that, btw. Back to metabolism - they run a process called the krebs cycle, the most complicated process that gives freshman students a headache in biology class. They basically break down water to form ATP - this is energy. Well, you don't just have one of these things per cell...you have many. For instance, a person who is sedentary will have four per muscle cell. A runner may develop 20 or more...I'm guessing because I can't remember exact numbers, but the fact is plain and simple. When you exercise you tell your body to increase these numbers. So this is why lipo and fad diets do not work. People will slip back into their old body patterns without bulking up the right way, the hard way.

If you want to learn about how to increase fat cell metabolism you can look up CLA, conjugated linoleic acid. I take it to help my body burn fat when I'm exercising.

Just build a retaining wall. You must have some neighbor or person who needs a wall. haha I built one with my hubby and voila, I have so much muscle break down from it...it will build back up nicely. We shoveled so much rock. It was like straight lunges...yikes. Just show up at the neighbors one morning, lol.

Exercise and diet.

Exercise will increase your metabolism.

The combination of exercise and diet can convert some fat into muscle.

I believe that at some point, your body's metabolism will actually change, so that if you are doing more exercise and less food, your body will actually become more efficient in using the food you eat -- hence the absolute need to alter both exercise and diet.

Build more muscle. I think the more muscle, the higher the metabolism. Exercise everyday. Don't skip meals, especially breakfast because it tends to slow down your metabolism.
