Hi dear friends, I and my wife are foreign nationals in the U.S., my wife is an international student and I am unemployed, as we want to renew our car insurance, we find it very difficult to pay for the cost of renewal and the insurer does not give us any discount and this is while we have purchased insurance from them for the previous year and have had no accident or claim. We are not happy with this situation. Could you please help us by giving us any advice or information that might be useful to our situation? Are there any arrangement/arrangements for international students that will somehow help them afford paying car insurance rates or is there any insurance company that would be willing to assist people and students in similar situations like us? Thank you very much for your help and answers, Sincerely, Passenger

Most companies surcharge drivers who have not been licensed in the U.S. or Canada for the last 2 or 3 years. Hence why you are paying a little more than others. However you should still make an effort to check rates with several carriers. You might be able to find a company that will accept you with only one year's driving in the U.S.

Good Luck

I don't think you'll find much in the way of assistance. You could always go to places in your local area like Catholic Charities and ask them for money. Sometimes, they help people pay bills. Travelers Aid may help, but I don't know. State Farm has always had low rates and good service. Progressive, also known as Drive Insurance, is who I currently have insurance with, and their rates have been really cheap. Try to get an online quote from either of these companies. Also, get only the coverage that you need. Sometimes, you can get 25,000 worth of coverage, other times you have to get 250,000 worth of coverage. High amounts are in case you wreck an expensive tractor/trailer or something. When I was a Drive Insurance website, I got quotes for each amount of coverage, and picked the best deal. I pay $130 every six months at Progressive/ Drive. I also have the option of paying every month, but I just pay the $130 every six months.

Your best bet is to shop around and talk to several insurance agents in your area. Each company has it's own rate structure and rates can vary from company to company.

Some companies are willing to set up monthly payment plans and others are not.

Good luck.

Well, you're not going to get a discount, but you could ask a local agent if they can give you a quote for a company that offers monthly payments, instead of requiring you to pay in full.

I am a insurance broker in California. Your best bet is to talk to a broker. That way you get a lot more options as far as price and underwriting rules. Make sure that they tell you about all start up fees before you go in to wright your policy.
