They are emotionally charged issues and many people are not able to allow others to believe in thier own ways and agree to disagree.
It's a shame that more adults cannot act more responsibly, but I suppose it takes all kinds.

no, it is not impolite. it's better to exchange ideas, knowledge, opinions, etc. than to be closed off. as a society, we're better off having the world be interconnected than some indigenous tribe living in a closed off village. look at some of those tribes in National Geographic. they're not progressing or advancing in society or civilization or technology or healthcare or education ... and so on.

on a side note, it was researched and documented that kids who were brought up in a frightening threatening environment grew up to be physically stronger but with a larger hind brain, which means they've become more barbaric and dumber.
on the other hand, kids who were brought up in a loving encouraging safe environment grew up smarter and more productive with a larger frontal brain.

so defensiveness may had been useful for survival in the hunters-and-gatherers time, but love and openness is better for this world.

No it is not impolite - it's American! The point is to discuss it intelligently (know your facts - opinions are a dime a dozen). There is no need to be rude and arrogant.

Its not impolite, but it is risky. Discussing either could potentially strain or break up friendships. Its been known to happen.
