There are five military services. I've never heard of them referred to as roots. They are, in order of precedence :)
Army
Marines
Air Force
Navy
Coast Guard

I really don't understand the question. Do you mean what is the root (origin) of each of the five military services?
The Army, Navy, and Marines were created during the American Revolution. Until 1947, the Army was in the War Department and the Navy and Marine Corps were in the Navy Department. In 1947, the Department of Defense was created with the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force (formerly part of the Army) in one department. The Coast Guard was originally called the Revenue Service, designated to prevent smuggling. Currently the Coast Guard is part of the Department of Homeland Security.
What kind of homework is this question from?

I don't know what a military "root" is, maybe the teacher is confused. The "branches" are Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force in the Dept of Defense and the Coast Guard in the Dept of Homeland Security, but can be directed by the president to serve under the Navy.

I think what the question is asking is the "root" of the service. For example the root of the Air Force is the Army Air Corps.
Sorry I do not know the rest.
Looking again I am wondering if the word ROOT is correct, double check the question.

Roots simply means when and where they began. In the US it's fairly simple, the Colonies began building it's army, navy, and Marines, prior to the Revolution! This effort began, I would imagine, in the early 1770's. The Continental Marines were established in 1775, by the Navy, to fire upon British ships with long rifles and blunderbuss, as an additional means of attack.
Since the Marines were established in 1775 by the Navy, it stands to reason that the Navy and Army were already well established then.
You may want to google Continental army and navy, to get a more precise timetable of their roots !
