After all, how else are they going to get enough money for upkeep and to take care of the clergy (who often have multiple jobs besides pastoring?)

How many other groups do you know that ask for money to keep things going? Other than PETA, Greenpeace, both the Democrat and Republican parties, the UCLA, St. Jude's, the Mayo Clinic, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, the March of Dimes, and countless others?

There has been too much focus on the mega-churches that are basically a tax free enterprise.

I know many pastors, most who have 6 or more years of schooling. They don't make a lot of money, compared to other people with the same schooling. Factor in the cost of heating a sanctuary, plus the electric bills, the cost of the grounds and building, and the assorted programs, and you can get a good idea of how expensive it is to maintain even a small church building. Factor in the fact that many ministers have a 24/7 job as a pastor (most are on call at any time of the day for emergencies) and you see it's not just about preaching a sermon.

purely touch them and clarify your undertaking. it would additionally be extra suitable to bypass bypass to a provider and stay after to talk to the pastor on my own. grant to bathe the church for some weekends or help out interior the place of work. this way, you're actually not asking them to grant you cash, you would be offering something in return. in the event that they'd instruct you a thank you to, a solid thank you to instruct your gratitude is to proceed to donate a while for a short at the same time as after too. God bless you. i'm praying each and every thing will artwork out fantastic.

We are called to tithe ten percent. I have no problem with that or even giving more. What I have a problem with are some Super Churches that keep hounding people for more than they should. There is a church called Lifechangers outside of Chicago where no matter what the pastor is preaching on, it always comes back to asking for more money. By the way, he drives a 60K German car and wears 2000 dollar Italian suits. His shoes cost more than my car payment every month. I have a problem with that.

Now on the other side of the coin, Willow Creek outside of Chicago is the biggest church in Chicago. That pastor takes a 40K salary and the only other money that he takes are to cover his expenses when he has to travel and lecture. Other than that, EVERY penny goes back to the ministry. And buys his clothes off the rack.....

Every charity asks for money. The Church is the only form of entertainment (other than PBS) that asks you to pay for it whatever you think that it is worth to you. The movies don't give you that deal.

To answer the guy above me, even pastors has a mortgage, a car, and children in college. It is an unfortunate fact of life that people need money.

Besides, if a pastor has given you a service by preaching the word, then the Apostle Paul says that he has earned his pay. Wouldn't a professor expect to get paid for his lectures?

Yes. And it goes a long way in showing where your trust is. Unbelievers of course have no business deciding what others do with their own money. But believers do have a responsibility for their own spiritual well-being. Nothing wrong with being rich unless the riches become your God. And those who do wrong with what is collected? They will answer to God.

I think it's ridiculous how many people get offended when anyone suggests that churches pay their fair share of taxes, especially property taxes. What right do they have to not contribute to the society that allows them to freely exist?

Thank you for this question. I agree with you 100%. I love to give money to my church because it is doing a lot to help people and like you said, it isn't going to pay for itself.
