Hi...The Mac OS X operating system provides a free software called "Text Edit," which you can find in your Applications folder. Text Edit will open rtf (Rich Text Format) files, and it will also write rtf files.

You have to tell it to write rtf files this way:
1. Open Text Edit;
2. Under the "File" menu, click on "New" to create a new document;
3. Go to the "Format" menu and pull it down to "Make Rich Text." And, then go ahead and write your homework.
4. When you are ready to save your document, the extension will be .rtf.
Hope this helps....good luck in school.

If you have OS X than you have TextEdit and you can save your text as RTF (Save As> File Format> Rich Text Format).
