Depending on the severity of their wounds/injuries, once they recover to the best extent they can, they are either retired under a 'medical' discharge as 'disabled' and are paid a percentage of their pay rate determined by how much their physical and mental functions are affected, or. . .
If, after recovery, they can prove to an evaluation board that they can still effectively perform their duties, they could be reassigned to active duty, sometimes to their original units and MOS (Military Occupational Specialty)
I know of one incident where a member of the Golden Knights Army Parachute team lost BOTH legs in a 'mid-air' collision with a team mate (his mate was killed on impact), but, after a long recuperation and MASSIVE therapy and prosthetic work, he is not only still on active duty, but is JUMPING AGAIN as a member of the Knights!

No, they do not go on vacation. Even if recovering from wounds, they are still in the service, their pay , benefits and obligations continue. They may be assigned to a hospital for further treatment or therapy, and when recovered enough to be returned to duty they will either rejoin their unit or be reassigned.
They may apply for leave, and receive it if their condition permits it.
Under some circumstances, they may be reassigned to a VA or military hospital close to their home. If their wounds are severe enough and there is no possibility of recovery a medical discharge may be in order.
The military will take care of them.

Depends on severity and nature of injury.
If they can recover fully they will likely rejoin their unit or be re-assigned.
If they can not recover fully but are still able to serve, they will be re-assigned.
If they can not recover fully and can no longer serve they will be discharged once they are able to be released from hospital care, and are able to either care for themselves or can be cared for outside a military medical facility.
They are not abandoned as some sick people who choose to politicize even this issue would like us all to believe.
I am sure some feel abandoned.
But I can also tell you from personal experience nothing is more disgusting to a wounded veteran than to witness how some politicize everything, including war and the tragedies of war.

If the soldier is wounded in combat, it will depend on the level of injury; he might get sent to a Hospital in Balad or Baghdad if the injuries are not serious; if they are, then they get sent to Landsthul, Germany where they get care, then transfered to Walter Reed for recuperation/treatment/rehabilitation. They don;t get released back home until there are either fully rehabilitated or habilitated enough for home care.

I have heard stories of soldiers returning home to a group of liberal war haters calling them everything you could think of ,and even spitting and throwing stuff at them, this is worse than being wounded in my opinion. What a feeling it must be to eat lead for your country and then get chastised for it by people yelling"to bad it wasn't in the head" and stuff like that, but to answer you question I think they go to Germany for awhile, then get a leave back to the states if its a minor injury,if its major ,I am not sure

Those troops who do recover from wounds and injury, often return to their units.
Those who are more seriously wounded are the people who should answer the rest of this question. I am not qualified to speak on their behalf, only they can dignify this question with an answer !

The soldier gets depressed and is frequently abandoned by the government. There is nothing worse than being a wounded soldier.
