The ideas of elves, and fairies originated in two different cultures. In the Germanic world there was a widespread belief in elves, who were considered to be invisible spirits. Elves could only be perceived by their effects. Their gender was unclear. The Anglo-Saxons called those spirits "ælf".
The belief in fairies derived from the Celts. Those fairies were visible women with a mortal body. Historians say that the myth of the fairies was spreading across Europe on the roundabout way through France, reaching England when the Normans arrived in 1066. If this is true, the ancient Anglo-Saxons did never get in touch with the belief in fairies - and had no name for them.
