Tibs answers are a little off. One does not need a transfers witch, and batteries are not needed.

One needs solar modules (panels), an inverter and a meter that is calibrated forward and backward.

With net metering, when the system is generating more than is being used, power is fed into the grid. When the usage rate is more than is being generated, the grid feeds the house.

With my system in California, the meter shows net usage at any given time. If have used more than I generated at the end of a one-year billing period, I pay the utility for the difference. If I generate more than I use, I have to GIVE the excess to the utility.

Batteries on a grid-connected system are absolutely optional. They are needed only if one has need for power during utility outages. Batteries cost several thousand dollars, especially if one wants to shed unnecessary loads during power outages. It takes power to keep batteries charged, and they must be replaced every few years.

Do a search on solar power in the green search box at the top of the page for some good information.

You need a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician. You also need an inverter, battery bank, and of course, the solar panels. The electrician will install the equipment, and properly wire the transfer switch.

The inverter produces AC from the solar panels and the batteries (at night), and the transfer switch selects either the AC power from the power company, or the AC power from the inverter.

If you get an inverter that senses the phase of the AC from the power company, then you can actually sell your excess power back to the power company.
