I'm not sure about the white light, but the tunnel can be explained...people who are suddenly overloaded with the stress of a situation like a near death experience often see "mandala" like patterns, similiar to people who are frying on LSD. Those could be interpreted as tunnel like shapes.

Maybe they actually DID see one. Just because that wasn't part of YOUR NDE, doesn't mean other people are making it up.
Some speculate that the the white light & tunnel are a flash back to the birth experience.
Others speculate that is the some type of hallucination/dream.
Others speculate that it is the experience of crossing over from the material to the spiritual world.
And others speculate that others are merely "claiming" to have seen such.

My dad(may God rest his soul) had 2 NDE experiences on the same day back in 1977 and both times he saw the light and the tunnel, went thru the tunnel and spoke to God. God told him it was not his time and that he would be coming back to us. He came back and we had another 12 years with him. He passed away in 1989 at very young age of 60

there's a drug pronounced as Ketamine that produces all the climate of an NDE whilst that's injected into favourite, non-demise human beings. In different words, an NDE is a organic, chemically brought about state that the human recommendations enters. The set off for an NDE is loss of oxygen to the recommendations and physique. in case you study scientific papers like those, you come across that there is a thoroughly chemical and thoroughly non-non secular rationalization for the best factors of each and every NDE.

because they are induced to say so by other people. Why is that there are no records of the tunnel and the light previous to the 20th century??
Because this is part of contemporary tradition, contemporary myth.
One says the tunnel thing another accepts and likes the idea and claims he/she has seen it as well and then lots more come behind claiming they have seen it as well...

I read once in 'New Scientist' (I'm not sure, it was 1986 and I was 15) that the dying forebrain de-oxygenates in concentric circles which can give the impression of a tunnel. But it varies, as your case shows.

Scientists feel it has to do with the brain's neurons mis-firing due to a lack of blood and oxygen.
I have seen the bright light and tunnel twice, both times when I fainted. Not heaven, not god to guide me, just a tunnel and bright lights. Mind fluff.

Perhaps, a lack of oxygen caused a brief hallucination.
I'm not sure, but, that is what I heard. I could be very wrong.

Personally, I think it's a neat trick the devil pulls so that people will think dying is great and won't be worried about their soul going to hell. Also, he knows they'll wake up and tell a lot of other people about it and their souls will be lost also.
