Gradual paralysis that will eventually affect the entire body. Ability to breath will cease. Movement will cease. Circulation will be begin to break down due to loss of function. There will be loss of bladder and bowel function and loss of swallowing and speaking ability. The body will lose it's ability to regulate temperature. Loss of movement will increase the risk of blood clots. Blood pressure may be difficult to maintain. Cardiac function will become impaired.

Through all of this, the patient typically remains aware of what is happening. It is not thought that ALS impairs cognitive processes.

Death will occur, in most cases resulting from respiratory collapse. There is no set time as to how long the patient will suffer. Some ALS patients have lived for years with the disease, others die within a few months or years from the time of diagnosis.

Truly a harrowing and brutal disease.
