Martin Luther, who sparked the protestant reformation, was a Catholic priest who left the church. He left the church because he was in anguish because the Catholic church and original Bible did not provide a formula for "guaranteed salvation".
The idea of undergoing a single moment when you give your life to Christ and then being guaranteed salvation, regardless of what you do after that, is the original basis of Protestantism. Not all protestants subscribe to that belief these days though.
The fact is, nowhere in the Bible does it say that salvation is guaranteed. It says lest you be saved you cannot enter heaven. It doesn't define being saved as a single event or proclamation.
However, the belief that God is infinitely merciful is something that no Christian can dispute. God's mercy is the reason Christ was sent. Hitler, Stalin, Dahmer could all be in heaven despite all their actions. All it takes is sincerely asking forgiveness and changing your heart.
. Think about the greatest Saint in Church history, Paul. He walked the known world his entire life and spread Christianity to the places it exists in to this day. Before that, he was a Roman citizen who hated, tortured and killed Christians. He was forgiven and made Christs greatest soldier.
Anyway,
long winded but I hope it helped.

I'm certain there are a lot of folks who are "saved" and continue to perform sinful acts. They are known as hypocrites. Whether they will get to heaven or not is up to the Lord. God does forgive those who have lost their way. But I do agree that actions that are pleasing to God is a better guarantee of getting thru those Pearly Gates than the hypocrites' declaration that they are saved.

When people say they have been saved, it usually means they have seen the light. Not literally, but have come to better understand life through a means. Some people find that path to a better life through religion. Personally, I don't think anyone can be saved by atoning for their sins or confession. Actions speak louder than words. Its great that you are genuinely sorry for your sins, but if you work hard to help yourself not sin anymore, that counts for more. People have also found salvation by rejecting religion and choosing not to believe, whatever works to make you feel better about yourself and helps you lead a good honest life, then there shouldn't be anyone to tell you otherwise.

Romans 6:23 Â For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Acts 3:19 Â Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
sin=death
repent=no sin
Get the picture?
GOD bless

We can fall away after we are baptized into Jesus.
Gal 5:4 You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.
You can not fall from a tree unless you are in the tree. You cannot fall from grace unless you are in grace. You have to have been safe at one time to fall away.
Anyone can obey after being very cruel, etc and be saved. Take Saul who became the Apostle Paul. Look what he did to the church earlier in his life, yet he was saved.

Jesus said by their works you shall know them. Works do not save, but a saved person evidences their faith through what they do.
Another point is that you may be misunderstanding our current fallen state. Do you think a person can stop sinning? Only those who haven't tried hard can say that.
Blessings,
Jack

Being saved means you seek forgiveness from your sins, and accept that you are week and not perfect, and that you will seek Gods guidance to not sin again. But you will, because you are human.

you are saved from Hell, yes. Problems in life will still occur, you will still sin, but you are forgiven. People will sin, but if we repent (and truly are sorry, a heartfelt forgiveness) then we are forgiven. It's not copout.
Hitler killed himself ...he's in hell. You are not saved by works.
