There's quite a bit of work available if you're good at it. I just had wood floors installed and finished (we installed unfinished planks) and the refinishing guy's schedule was out 6 months. Then again, he considers himself an artisan (used to refinish wood furniture) and his skills are in big demand, especially among wealthier customers. I just happened to have a friend who owns a flooring company and he got the appointment for me when I started a remodel 6 months earlier.
Wood floors are very popular for remodels and new construction these days. And, there's still a lot of building going on out here. Installers get about $2 to $2.50 a square foot. And, good refinishers get about $4.50 a square foot for sanding and refinishing, plus $0.50 or so for each additional finish coat.

if you are not a high demand artisian like mentioned and can charge premieum prices, if you want to be an employee for a floor contractor ,there is work but the wages are not too good as immigrant labor has driven the wages down compared to a decade ago, if you are anywhere above 17 or 18 dollars an hour stay where you are,as you will only be able to get 10 to 13 out west. I really miss the days of prevailing wage.
