Plus = more....... in french they don't have these special comparative and superlative forms you have in english so they only add "plus" to indicate a higher degree; the article in the beginning of the superlative form means "the most short (of all)" - so to speak, just an example for you to understand better - so you can differentiate from the comparative form

shorter = plus court(e)
shortest = le plus court(e)
