I would go for the 47 720p if they are the same price. 1080p is just a higher resolution, but 720p has a very crisp picture, and the difference is very slight.

Without a doubt, get the 47" 720p! Here's my reasoning. How far are you going to sit from the television? Once you are further than 9 feet away from your HDTV, the human eye cannot tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. The 720p has a max viewing distance of 14ft. Therefore, you can set up your large 47" screen, sit back, and enjoy the picture anywhere further back than 9 feet, and the picture will look exactly the same as the 1080p. I've been debating on televisions but I can't find a 720p that is 47". It seems like the opposite on all sites. The 720p is the 42" and the 1080p is the 47". Hmm... I'd like to see a link to a 47" 720p!

All the comments above aside I would say the 720p for 2 reasons.
One, with a 42" TV you are barely going to notice the difference. They say it takes 40" to tell between the 2 and you are barely there.
Second, the ONLY thing in 1080p for a while is either HD DVD or Blue Ray. If you don't have either of those then you're not going to be watching true 1080p anyway so what's the point?

1080p and 720p are 2 different HDTV standard, both will give FANTASTIC quality but the 1080p will give you that much more better picture than the 720p, so I say go with the 1080p. But I'll tell you this, you WILL NOT experience the HD picture on cable unless you have an HD cable box which outputs limited HD channels, and for a DVD player, rather than getting the $500 HD DVD player just buy a 1080p HDMI upconverting DVD player, they are ALOT cheaper and will give you the FULL HD experience on normal DVD movies. (Upconverting DVD players convert your your normal DVDs to an HD Level, and outputs it to your TV), with HDMI DVD players you also need a HDMI cable which ranges from $30-$100 (depending on length) and your TV must be HDMI compliant.

The 1080p one. The HDTV compaines refer to it as "True HD," because it has way more detail than, for example the 720p. So if you're going for an HD experience instead of a tv upgrade the 1080p's for you.

At this TV size, the 1080p improvement in resolution is definitely noticeable. The trend is toward 1080p, and I bet in a year or two it will be hard to find 720p sets at all.

1080p 42'' HD TV because it will have better graphics than the 720p. Sure the 720p is bigger but just by a few inches. I would sacrifice a few inches for better graphics.
