The Orthodox Church was the first church, it is described in Acts as "The Way". It is the Church that the Catholics split off of.

Dear Catholictothemaxtradition,
I do not mean to be rude to you when I say this- but you have it wrong. All Church history even from the beginning and the apostles gives proof that the Orthodox Church is the first church. It is the first Church and it has remained that till today, and will forever. In Acts it is refered to as "the way" and later when it says churches are built it refers to Orthodox Churches.
The Orthodox Church has not changed as has the Catholics. They have added teachings and other things onto Christianity - such as the immaculate conception. Orthodoxy has remained the same. Why should the Church, which is the bridegroom of Christ change when Christ Himself never changes?
The martyrs described, the first nuns and monks, the first churches, the first Christian rulers- all were Orthodox. There are relics also that give proof.

Of course. There was a schism between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches that was very important historically.
As for having heard of it locally, yes, I have some Orthodox friends and some of the Orthodox churches have big festivals every year. The Orthodox liturgy is quite beautiful.

There are Orthodox Churches:
The Chalcedonian Greek Orthodox or Eastern Orthodox ( the autocephalous like the Russian,or Greek, autonomous and daughter or dependent churches) The split between the Western and Eastern Orthodox/Catholics came in 1054. There are canonical and non canonical Orthodox Churches not in communion with each other. The Eastern Orthodox use the Byzantine Rite, but their are also Western Rite Orthodox.
The Oriental Orthodox Churches(Coptic,Ethiopian,Eritrean,Armenian, Syrian Jacobite,Malankarese) split from the "Imperial" Orthodox/Catholic Church in 451 and called"Monophysite"
The Assyrian Orthodox Catholic Church of the East
The "East Syrian' Orthodox called "Nestorian" which split in 431
The Oriental Orthodox and East Syrian liturgical families have their own liturgies that are different from each other and the Byzantine(Greek Orthodox) Liturgical Tradition
In the Western Europe and the States and Canada there are many different jurisdictions of the Eastern Orthodox and the Other Orthodox Churches. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese is one of the canonical Eastern Orthodox jurisdictions in the USA and is under the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.

I have hear of Greek, Russian, Egyptian and even Orthodox Jews. It seems to be a broad term used to describe churches that were around before protestants. Mostly though you hear of the Greek orthodox which split from Catholocism when they wanted their own Pope.

Yes, I have heard of the Orthodox Church. I took a comparative religion class in college and one of our assignments was a group project: attend a religious service and report on it. My group went to a Greek Orthodox service. I thought it was very interesting - very similar to the Catholic service, except that some of the service was in Greek, and the entire service was sung.

no, no.
we catholics ARE the Orthodox Church.
We were there since the year 1. Before us were the jews. And since Christ is God and He created Ctholisism, don't you think that It is the right religion?
The Orthodox, (they call themselves that, but they stole the name from us.) broke away from us Catholics.
Look it up!
