if god did not want them to do what they wanted to do then why free will? It does not make sense either.
I cannot see it as a test to see if they would obey, how can you have free will and obey at the same time, that is an oxymoron.
Maybe he was afraid they would learn that he was just a figment of the shroom's they were eating instead and if they ate from the tree of wisdom they would wise up and realize it is all a crock??
I mean come one Caine supposedly marries some woman from a wandering tribe, where did they come from when the only humans on earth at that point were Adam Eve and Caine because Abel was dead. Where did the wandering tribe come from? Really?
Just a theory..=]

Not to be taken literally, the tree was a test for Adam & Eve. There was nothing special about the tree, God simply made that part up to try and trick Adam & Eve into eating from it. He wanted to see how loyal they were to him. The snake, that was God as well. Maybe God wanted to test human curiosity, to see how far a human will go before they give in. Seems like a stupid thing to do seeing as how he created us and should already know.

You are what U eat ,what U read, and perhaps the usage of tree of knowledge of good and bad ,right or wrong wasn't needed by them at the time .All details were not released to us about all of the creators doings in the Bible and perhaps rightly so since we have been dealt meat in due season as benefits us,and the one who could write a Manuel on us had all necessary arrangements in place for a perfect system.Example -- A highly qualified tour guiding group were running a high level river trip and things were going great, but someone decided to halt before entering a serious rapid run, take some days to call in more guides to help with the remainder of the run because of DISTRUST, lack of CONFIDENCE .In this case Satin implied that they could do it on their own without the creator and his adequate provisions.Perfect people made a decision ,no mistake was made here, like imperfect you or me could do ,and even we are quite able to make perfect decisions with the right knowledge and understanding of a given situation.

There were un-told amounts of other trees that Adam and Eve had their pick to eat from. This particular tree represented the right that God has as the creator and universal sovereign to decide what is best for us as his creation, what is right and wrong. Adam and Eve selfishly wanted not to submit to his authority, committed the sin of eating from it, and in the end put all of their descendants, US, into the inherited sinful condition we are in. God doesn't hate knowledge or he would keep us in the dark about who he is and his purposes for us in the future. That's why we have the Bible.

God is not against knowledge as a whole, at the time, he only wanted Adam and Eve to remain ignorant of the knowledge of GOOD AND EVIL. He gave them the freedom to choose whether they wanted that knowledge by putting the tree there.

Knowledge of good and evil... not just knowledge. It's a reference to the ability to discern between "good" and "evil", to weigh consequences of actions, to be fully aware of our surroundings and ourselves, to think about thought itself, to know whether an action is performed out of consideration for the community and others or self... The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil has nothing to do with science, math, and proper grammar.
Whether the story is literal (as some people will argue until their dying day) or metaphorical (representing the point in the evolution of man where early man gained cognitive abilities allowing them to think like we do), the point is not that God hates knowledge. The point is that man has free will, can choose his own actions, and will be responsible for the consequences.
As Mark Twain once said, "Man is the only animal that blushes... or has any reason to"... or something to that effect, anyway.

God doesn't hate knowledge. He is knowledge. His thinking is so far above ours that we can't even fathom it.
God told Adam and Eve to stay away from the tree because He knew it would bring death into the world.
God gave man one rule at that time and he couldn't even follow that one.

I'd say that God's as indifferent towards knowledge as He is towards everything else in creation and this was probably just where He went to get some "God time".
All these people who keep banging on about "knowledge of good and evil" should try reading A Clockwork Orange.

Yes it is total BS! And to everyone who answered that God was "testing" Adam & Eve:
Do you like being tricked by your "friends"?
Also, it not the snake's fault if Satan decided to use his form! Don't blame the snakes!
Also, it's not Adam's fault he was tricked!
Also, it's not Eve's fault! She was inquisitive as she was made to be by GOD!
Also, it's not God's fault that Adam & Eve screwed up!
Also, it's not the argument's fault that it's circular....
addendum: Holy half the bible, Keith!

HE warned them Adam first. However, just because it does not say that GOD told Eve, we should NOT assume she did not know GOD's will.
HE does NOT hate knowledge! HE wants us to have knowledge. However, HE did not want us to experience disobedience. It is not easy to explain. I hope this makes sense.
GOD bless
