Are you talking about the LDS church? They tell the most lies about Joseph Smith.
A guy who lead away a small group of people? No. Joseph Smith wrote Doctrines and Coventant 132, which promoted polygamy. The LDS church only changed their position on polygamy because of government pressure, just like they changed their position on racism based on government pressure in the 60's.
A good book to read to learn about LDS and Joseph Smith is "Under the Banner of Heaven". That book details a lot of facts about the LDS church that the LDS church would prefer that you didn't know.

The bible does say that a "brother offended is harder to win than a fortified city" and for that, I am terribly sorry that some people are so mean to mormons. However, I am also sorry that the mormon church holds secrets from its members. Do the new converts to mormonism realise that this new faith they latched onto believes that satan and Jesus are brothers, mutual sons of God and extra-terestrials with God from the planet Kolab? No, and I am sure that I can give a guess as to why they are not told that right away, too. There is much secrecy in the mormon religion and that, alone, makes me sad. Yes, we should not make up stories. We should not hide any of them, either.

Maybe because if you're dyslexic your religion comes out as LSD? No, jk.
There are fake stories made up about every prominent person, thing, religion, movement, etc. Those who are the butt of such rumors and lies often feel them more intensely, and thus think that they are more stigmatized than other groups.
For example, feminists. Only one crazy woman burned her bra, but the mainstream movement only burned corsets. Feminists don't hate men. We don't advocate hurting men or taking over their lives. In fact, a lot of our positions are very, very focused around men's rights as well. For example, we very strongly believe that men should get paid paternity leave from work so they can be closer to their new children. But see how many lies people have spread?
And every group of people is like that. Individuals who are negative and don't stand up for many ideals sometimes slur people who do just because they're bored. It's all about sensationalism, whether they're talking about Joseph Smith, Gloria Steinem, or the prophet Mohammed. So, just forgive those people and correct the misinformation is all that can be done.
We need more people like you who are willing to have positive dialogues.

Well, what fake stories are you concerned about? It's not just the Book of Mormon, which from a theological point of view is more or less unremarkable, although it makes incredible historical claims. It's also Doctrine and Covenants (which includes revelations up to the 1980s), Joseph Smith's translation of the Bible (which includes the Book of Moses), and The Pearl of Great Price (which includes the incredible Book of Abraham). There are many stories and teachings in these books that are part of Mormonism, although not all attribuable to Joseph Smith.
While it's true that LDS members are never called to practice polygamy, and are in fact not allowed to practice it, it is still a requirement of the D&C. As this Mormon site says, what is essential is to believe in the principle, not to practice it (http://www.mormonhaven.com/polygamy.htm#5 )

They make up lies because they can not back up what they do not understand. People on here do not do there research. (Like the first person that answered this question.) If they knew anything about the LDS church they wouldn't bash it as much as they do. and if you look at it this way. We know the truth and everyone else will have to live with that.

Not only are we usually not called to practice polygamy, we're NEVER called to practice it.
I've never heard that argument about Joseph Smith having to be over 1000 years...
Anyway!!! People make up stuff because there are lots of liars and rumors out there and the only thing that can be trusted about the church comes from the church.
Nothing is secret, just sacred. If you ask, they will talk about it.
----------------
ina_nutshell ....no it doesn't. It says in Revelation not to take away from the prophecy of this book....the Book of Revelations...When John the Revelator was alive, there was no "bible", just books.
----------
Valley..........WOW....you REALLY need to learn about the church.

It was interesting when South Park (of all shows) actually had an episode in which Satan had returned and everyone was going to hell except Mormons.
Glad I'm a Mormon, but we certainly do not think everyone else is damned and once and for all, we do not practice polygamy nor do we condone it.

So, the LDS churches don't really believe that Hebrews visited North America and wrote the story on some gold plates?

And my question to you is why is it that when a representative from the LDS visit your house they don't tell you everything that they believe in? For example, that Jesus was a created being and that if you are a LDS you will become a God.
Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Philemon 1:3
