I was told that Islam and Muslims treat their women with respect but having lived in the area for a while I was shocked, single women are not permitted to go outside unless they are with a family member and they must be covered up, one woman told me women are treated worse than animals.

I was taking the girls for a walk and I had a dress on, not short, and I was spat on and called horrible names and a man told me to get off the street or I will be arrested for exposing my arms and legs, I was shocked, I never went out again, I was to scared. I saw lots more but don't like talking about it, it is too upsetting

I am glad women are not treated like that in Australia. Why are women treated like this there, Are they not Gods children as well, shouldn't they be treated with a bit more respect?

This is what was explained to me, by a wife of a Middle Eastern Studies professor. You do realize that you have to think outside the box when you want to think like another culture. For instance, how we Americans do things may seem funny to those of you in the "land of Oz" but that's because we are only familiar with our own culture and our own values.

For the Muslims, they feel that requiring women to wear the Hijab keeps women from being ogled and therefore it allows the women to not walk in fear of being accosted. Whereas, the women in their culture feel like us women in western dress, attire ourselves in a way to appear sexy so we please our men. To them, we are being degraded. Funny isn't it? That's why the men treated you in such a horrible manner (from our mindset). Their culture states that when you dress in a way to expose your skin, you are showing that you do not value your modesty. Again, you have to think of this in terms of their mindset.

While in Rome, do as the Romans. While in the Middle East, do as the Middle Easterners. Even the Catholic church teaches against immodest dress, and at one time, women were required to wear a head-scarf at all times. You are merely shocked because you have lived in a hedonistic society for so long. You think that clothing rules are personal choices and have no impact on others.

you should not confuse a people's cultural backwardness with their religion...

...it would be like someone in another country seeing a very disgusting explicit American t.v. show and thinking that it was a product of Christianity!

p.s. what is "the area"? Islamic societies range from west Africa to eastern Europe to southeast Asia.
