I spent my entire law enforcement career under Miranda and it had little to no effect on my performance or results. I was challenged in court on various interrogations and subsequent confessions that I obtained....never lost a case due to lack of or inappropriate Miranda issues.
I looked at Miranda as any other ethical responsibility that I had under the law and adjusted my investigative techniques accordingly.

To expound a little. Miranda only applies to in custodial interrogations. And that means the person is not free to leave. If a police officer walks up to you on the street and says, do you know about what happened at the 7-11? And the person says, "You mean where I killed the clerk." His statements come in. Also, in a DUI the officer can ask you preliminary questions like "When did you last eat? Have you been drinking?" etc. Honestly, most officers worth their salt can get a person to confess without taking him to custody.

Law enforcement officers are required by this law to inform suspects of their legal rights prior to any questioning. Failure to do this usually results in the perpetrator being released, charges dropped.

The decision requires suspects IN CUSTODY be advised of their rights before being ASKED questions that could incriminate them. Contrary to popular belief, the officer on the scene rarely asks incriminating questions once the suspect is in custody.
