I think it should start as early as possible. Kids need to be properly educated on firearms at a very early age. Learning respect and safety around guns is something that I think is very overlooked these days. You sister is against in because you didn't consult with her first. Try to win her over by talking about the issues I've mentioned. Her son now knows more about gun safety than most kids his age.

But thats what makes the U.S. Military the best, it is an all volunteer. That means the men are their fighting on their own free will, unlike Red China. China has a draft style military, and at this time would loose a conventional war with America; boots on the ground doesn't win the war. They lack a strong air force and navy, which the U.S. excels in, and have no means of transporting those millions of troops. I don't care how many men you have, if they have no way of getting to our homeland just launch ballistic missile after missile until they are blown away. And to your last statement, Iraq did have a conventional Army that the U.S. basically vaporized within the first few months of the invasion.

no he's not too young. If you're being responsible then i don't see whats wrong with it,.. Its good that he's learning that. It can be a sport or to carry for protection when he's older, or hunting. I would ask your sister why she doesn't like it.

As long as the boy is responsible enough, I don't see the problem. Especially since he's been through the safety courses.
A hundred years ago no one would have even blinked at this!

I would have hit the ceiling too! First of all, he's her child and you should have gotten her permission before doing something like that. If that's not something that she wants her young son doing at this age, then you should respect that and not take him out anymore. Just because you guys grew up one way, doesn't mean that she would want to raise her children the same way. I totally agree with your sister.... he's way too young. Be respectful of her wishes.

I think it depends on the maturity of the child. We learned before that as well. Maybe it would make a difference to her if he was learning in order to hunt and no just shoot targets. My son is 7 and we are starting with his bb gun now.

You were way out of line to buy your nephew a gun of his own and to enroll him in training without your sister's permission. That was a big guffaw on your part, and I don't blame her for being angry about that. This is her child, not yours. You owe her an apology for that.
That aside, if a child is going to be around guns then they should be taught gun safety from an early age and the guns should never be where they are accessible to a child, regardless of what training they have been given. Children do not have the judgement to handle a gun unsupervised.
Starting them in gun training has been done at a younger age than your nephew. It depends on the child, their coordination, and their comprehension of gun safety rules.

Yes it is!
At 10 years of age, he should be out playing football, hide and seekwiht his mates. Not learning to fire a gun!!!!!
This is why children are killing children.
Keep him away from firearms. Your sister has every right to be cross. She is trying to keep her son safe.
Even if it is only under adult supervision, he may try and get one illegally to show his friends.
You have to be responsible, why not take up a different, less violent type of hobby.
