I am thinking of purchasing a dashund.

1. Do you they have trouble climbing steps?

2. Would it be able to jump on my bed?

We had one that broke his back jumping off our bed. We had to put him down. It was awful. This is apparently fairly common with this breed. The long back and short legs are a bad combination. We'd never get another one for that reason.
We had those stairs others write about but if the dog wants to jump off the other end of the bed or couch there's not much you can do to stop it.

The Dashunds will probably not have problems climbing up steps, but I would buy some kind of steps to go by your bed. But don't let it jump off your bed or it might hurt it's back, and it cost a lot of money to make it better.

Dachshunds have long spines and can easily have spinal injuries which can result in permanent damage. They could have trouble climbing steps. If you do get a dachshund, I recommend you don't let the puppy climb steep stairs until 6 months or so to give their spine time to grow and develop. Unless you have an extremely low bed, meaning just a mattress on the floor, I don't think a dachshund could jump on your bed. I would recommend getting dog stairs that are sold at petstores/wal-mart/etc. You can get them at many different places. Be sure you train your dachshund to climb up and down the stairs and not to jump off the bed.

The problem with Dachshunds is they don't have a problem climbing steps, but it's not good for their backs. It would be able to jump off of your bed, but once again, it's not good for their backs and if your bed is too tall, it won't be able to get back on. I wouldn't even recommend buying steps because it's really better for them to have a ramp with a steady incline. When Dachshunds start climbing and jumping too much, it can cause problems with the disks in their backs and the surgery is quite costly. If you get a Dachshund, buy a ramp. By the way, great choice of dog! Dachshunds are very sweet, funny, charming, intelligent, not to mention adorable dogs! You won't regret getting a Dachshund if you can give it the proper care it needs with its back and all.

my mini dachshund has no problem going up and down the stairs in my house, and also had no problem jumping up on the couch or bed......
but it's best to discourage this behavior, dachshunds are naturally prone to back and hip problems, made worse by going up and down the stairs, and jumping up and down from high places such as sofas and beds. if you're going to get a dachshund make sure you do your homework, in the past 3 yrs that i've had mine, we've fought tapeworms, coccidia ( intestianal parasite) and last year she was diagnosed with a heart murmur, and as of late has a low white blood cell count. Not to say this is true of all dachshunds, but just make sure you purchase from a reputable breeder, i didn't and i've racked up the vet bills because of it. also, you didn't mention if your looking at the miniatures or the standards, the minis are more prone to problems, but they're all incredably stubborn to potty train.

First of all, it depends on whether you are getting a standard or a miniature dachshund.

I have two mini dachsies, and neither have any trouble climbing normal stairs. One is able to jump on a bed or couch, the other isn't. Being able to jump on things isn't really a good thing, as they can hurt their back by jumping on or off furniture. Miniatures have delicate backs and you have to be careful with them. They're wonderful, sweet dogs though.
Make sure you find a good, reputable breeder to buy from; don't make the mistake my parents did by buying from a pet store.

Most doxies do not have a problem climbing steps, but may need a ramp or doggy steps to get onto beds or sofas. It depends on the dog and their physical build though.

Dachshunds are sweet.
My mom has two and my sister has two.
They do have trouble climbing steps, and they have to be lifted onto and off the bed, couch, chairs etc.... I noticed they bark lot. A high pitch yap! That is why they have two each for companionship .
But I think they are a lot of work.

Make sure you research the breed first, they do have back problems just like basset hounds.

Find some dachshund rescue groups on line and email them asking basic info on the breed. These are people who know the ins and outs of the breed the best.

They can climb stairs but jumping on and off beds can seriously injure their backs and can cause paralysis.
