There are a number of predictions from unrelated sources that say that Dec 2012 is the date. There have been other predictions that many people believed that never came true. The Millerite religion is based on one such prediction, that never came true...

We are NOT going to die in 2012.
The magnetic pole reversal will probably take thousands of years to complete, and may have actually started many years ago. But pole reversals have happened many times before and life went on. The main effect will be that magnetic compasses don't work the same as the used to.
