Jesus wanted men who could abide by the Holy Spirit and therefore spread the Gospel unto other men. Since His first disciples were fishermen by trade, He used a pun by inferring that He would make them "Fishers of Men". Which He did!

That's funny, but I don't think you understand what this means.When it talks about be in fishers of men it doesn't mean literal fishing, it means that we need to be missionaries to the world and bring his (Christs) words and the truth to our brothers and sisters. We need to search for those who are hurting and serve them One of the main ways, spoken of, is by bringing them Christs true gospel and teachings. That's what I believe anyway.

He was talking to fishermen so an image about fishing was a good one for them about discipleship or making followers and observers of Jesus teachings and grace

He wants people to share the Gospel, the good news that God loves them. And also baptize people in the name of the Son and the Father and the Holy Spirit. : )

Because fishing actually ends up hurting things that are categorized as not human for the sole purpose of devouring them, despite the fact that they do not taste good, all under the guise of harmless, tranquil pastime.

Basically he is saying he wants us to bring souls to him. Lost souls. Just like fishermen bring fish in to shore. He wants us to lead them to Him so they can see the light. He was saying it to fishermen as an example that they'd understand.
