I have a 7 (almost 8) year old girl who cannot pronounce her R's. I talked to someone at the school last school year (1st grade) and they said she's fine and by age 8 she should learn to say her R's on her own. Well....here comes age 8, and she still cannot pronounce them. Is this normal? Or should I demand that she be put in speech regardless of what the school thinks?
(Her cousin is almost 10 and cannot pronounce her R's very well...my sister-in-law said that she was worried too, and when she talked to the school they told her she didn't need speech...so finally she made them put her in it- and she thinks it was too late.)

She might need speech therapy. I could not pronounce my R's very well in kindergarten and I also had problems with my SH and CHs. My parents had me in speech therapy once a week all the way through elementary school. I am in my 30's now and there are still certain words with Rs that I have a hard time with, but the CH and SHs I don't have an issue with anymore.

You can always take her to speech therapy. My cousins had a baby that was born with mechonium in her throat now she is 7 and she went through speech therapy from 5-7 and now shes good. I would help her to take care of her speech before she gets to the age where she thinks their is something wrong with her when their isn't. Hey my neice is 11 and prounounces her ls with ys. SO she says Yetter instead of letter.

Put her in speech! I know that most kids in first grade are able to pronounce things correctly, and if they aren't, the problem usually doesn't just go away by itself. Try and do it before anyone starts to tease her (Kids do that sometimes), and then help her at home with whatever her speech homework is.

My daughter is 3 1/2 and still doesn't really understand the Why questions. No need to worry about it.

My sister had this same problem at about that same age. Check with your school because it may already have a program for speech therapy. If not, I would check around locally if I were you.
