If you are talking AKC shows, a desexed dog isn't allowed to compete in conformation, except in the case of a Jr. Handler exhibiting. Can you elaborate please? I'd be glad to help if I knew a bit more aobut your situation.

Depends on what organization you intend to do your showing in. I think a few registries DO allow altered dogs in conformation, AKC does not, but does allow them in obedience, agility, herding trials, etc.

Showing is fun, there is also non-sanctioned shows I'm sure you can find. I have shown in conformation and got REALLY REALLY tired of the politics, I would love to try obedience or agility someday.

The BEST thing to do is find a training club, join it, get instruction from those already showing and LEARN ALL YOU CAN. That is a great way to break into it!

Have fun!

If you are talking about showing your dog in the Conformation ring, you cannot. You can't have a dog spayed/neutered if you are showing it in the Conformation ring. All dogs there must be intact. You need to find classes and hopefully, a mentor to get you started and to work with you. Also, you could check around to see if there are any 4 H groups that are working on showing dogs in your area.

No, an altered dog can not be shown in conformation...but other much more fun stuff you can do!

Shelties are fun, bright dogs!

You can continue your obedience training and show in that...but agility is MUCH more fun! Or check out Rally.

search:

www.akc.org
www.clean run.com for links to agility organizations

both sites will have a "calendar of events" you can check and see what trials are in your area....go and watch!

I'm glad you're active with your dog, keep it up!
You can't show in conformation if she's spayed...
But you can do plenty of other performance events...Rally, agility, herding (since you have a Sheltie)...

Good luck

ADDED: victoria: I'm not rich. I love what I do very much and I have a great love and respect for the breeds I present and the breeders that sacrifice to produce the BEST in their breeds...
A lot more goes into showing than what appears to be (to the untrained eye) just prancing around the squared circle....

An altered dog cannot be shown in conformation but may be shown in obedience, herding, agility and Jr. Showmanship (if you're under 18 years of age).

Find a local training class as well and go to local shows. Look for a mentor to help you. Often, you can find someone who is willing to help you learn "dogs" if you are willing to help them out as an apprentice showing their dogs (ie: walking, pottying, cleaning up etc..)

Edit: Victoria, I'm neither bored nor rich. What I am is driven to only breed dogs that fit the breed standard and are capable of doing the job they were intended to do... its more a matter of protecting the breed than it is to do with anything else.

You don't need to worry about gaiting and stacking in order to show in obedience. These are only things that need to be learned for conformation showing..you can't show a spayed dog in conformation. You can show in obedience and rally though.

***** I also am definately not bored or rich, I enjoy showing a good quality dog..I compete in obedience and rally and have Danes titled in both. I also enjoy showing in conformation with my Dane boy. I have to work hard and save money in order to show**********

Dog Show -- I watch them on TV -- all the dog does is sit-- stand -- and walk on a leash on the right side..

Try K9 Doggie Dancing -- then the talent comes in .. Turn -- reverse -- - round - Figure 8 -- jump hoops -- circle -- all done to music in a routine for you and the dog. We are goin this friday to a Luthern Church to perform for the elderly.. Usually 10 will be their.. In the spring show there were 27 dogs... Poodle (Frosty Paws) has ribbons and trophies from all reginal and national competions...
Our Golden Retriever -- Joel -- loves dancing and the personalty shines ....
