I was in an airport resteraunt during a layover in Phoenix this summer. I ordered sweet tea and, of course, they didnt have it. As a matter of fact, the waiter asked what it was. He thought is was a type of leaf that you brew! After explaining to him what it was, he told me he had never known.
My question is...do people not from the south seriously not know what sweet tea is??? Or am I just that gullible??

I think some people misunderstood the whole 'south' thing. I was saying I am from the south...not that Arizona is considered the south...
Also, for those that asked. Sweet tea is made by boiling black or orange pekoe and adding sugar (about 2 cups to a gallon) and cold water. So yeah, just tea with sugar!
Oh and last thing...I thought I was being gullible because I was in Arizona and he didnt know what it was BUT Arizona brand sells sweet tea!! Kinda weird...

Okay, I AM from the south but I can answer your question. No you're not gullible. A lot of people from the north really don't "get" what sweet tea is. This surprised me a few years ago when a friend of mine went somewhere (I don't remember where) and ordered sweet tea and they didn't have it. She had to make her own out of sweetener packets.
I have a friend from Washington who had never heard of sweet tea, either. At first, the very thought of putting sugar in the tea surprised her and she just knew that it was going to be bad lol. I talked her into trying it and now it's almost the only way she will drink it.
So, I don't know why the people who live up north have never heard of it. It's like some of our sayings they don't understand and vise versa.

I'm from the New England Area and I love sweet tea, as do a lot of my friends that live around here.
So, it's not just the South. They just don't really sell it up here. Only in Arizona Iced Tea cans.
Real sweet tea though, not canned, is excellent.

Why would people pretend to not know what it is? Someone mentioned it to me a few months ago and I had absolutely NO idea what she was talking about! I thought she wanted iced tea, until she explained that it was a Southern beverage. So, unless someone who does not live in the South has ties to it or knows its culture well, chances are he/she won't know anything about Sweet Tea. Believe it.

Hello:
I used to date a guy from Texas, and I thought he was joking when he asked if I made him some sweet tea. I said,"Yeah right, there is no such thing as sweet tea,"and he insisted that there was. It wasn't until I asked his mother and she confirmed that southerners love sweet tea,and it is very popular in the south.
I am from Michigan and his mother taught me how to make sweet tea,and I will admit that when it was made the right way,it is very good! I had NEVER heard of sweet tea, until I started dating a guy from the south. ;-)

The DC section is inbetween the south and the north. only north of the DC section is the state of Maryland. It does not have maximum of those staples the two. only south of the DC section is Virginia, which has lots of those issues.

It's strictly a southern tradition. So therefor, most people not from the southern states, do not know what it is. Apparently, it's not that healthy either, so I'm not missing out on much.

Nope, don't know what it is, if you mean anything different than sweetened tea.
You shouldn't be shocked, I'm sure every region has things that the whole world doesn't know about. If they did, what would be the point of travel?
