Well, I'm Eastern Orthodox and I find most people I encounter in the USA know extremely little about it, and they know even less about Oriental Orthodox. And I just learned about the Aramaic texts about three weeks ago. So there is some truth to your question.

As to why, I think it's because intellectually the USA has been European and Protestant, and even Europe has been provincial. Even the Roman Catholic authors I have read are either (these days) silent about Eastern Christianity or (in previous years) were abusive towards it (Hillaire Belloc is who I have in mind). That's an over generalization as I've written it but the heart of it correctly describes my experience, and I've read a lot.

I myself have posted several answers in the last week or so here mentioning Eastern Christianity.

I've rambled. I hope my answer helps a little.

I don't know who told you this, but it is not true at all.
I'm a Christian, and I learned about this stuff when I was about 12 years old.

Who told you so??? I'm a Christian and I know about it. Maybe not each and every Christian knows it, but most do.
