Is it true that an American Staffordshire is not a pit, but a cousin of the Pit Bull?

The American Staffordshire Terrier is also called an American Pit Bullterrier. The Staffordshire Bullterrier is a different breed altogether. Both share a similar genetic background and I would personally classify them as pit bulls.

I have looked into this question a lot. I own a English staffordshire which can be ruled out as an American pit bull but from all my research I cant for the life of me see the difference between an American staffordshire and an American pit bull. People who own amstaffs dont like the name pit bull and you cant blame them. Pitt bull is the name given to dogs that are put in a pit to fight. That is the only thing that makes the dogs different (the lifestyle they are living) Their build is the same their height is the same they look the same so what is there to differ them? After writing this answer I went into the web site dogbreedinfo.com and looked up American staffordshire. In the description it said that the American kennel club registered these dogs as American staffordshire bull terriers and the British kennel club registered them as American pit bull terriers so there is your answer they are the same dog.

The AKC changed the name of the pit bull when they accepted it into there club because of the "pit bull" stigma the name carries. AKC came up with what they considered to be "BREED STANDARDS" and began breeding for these standards. This was SO long ago that they believe the two dogs to be different breeds. But, in fact Pit bulls and Staffs were at one time the same thing.

The first answer is the right one from everything I've been told. "pit bulls" are a group name for the three breed they listed in the first answer.

Pitbull is a term used to describe three different breeds: American Pitbull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
All three breeds are similar and are technically "Pitbulls" but they are entirely different breeds.

yes and no...they all come from the same stock...but at one time...the APBT was bred for gameness and the Am STAFF was bred for dog shows...so over the years they have developed differently.
