I have a good friend with no insurance who won't go to the doctor, and I was wondering if anyone had input or a site where I could find input for her? Yes, I realize she should go to the doctor, but you can't make someone do something, so this was what I could offer. Any help would be much appreciated.

sounds for the most part like severe constipation. Hard stools cause internal hemmorhoids to bleed resulting in the blood with the stools. Also cause bloat and abdominal cramping etc etc. Suggest your friend start by drinking at least 2 liters of water every day, make it a habit. Get docusate sodium at the drug store, it is otc, and take that it will soften the stools make them easier to pass. And increase fiber in the diet. But the water is paramount.

It sounds like IBS. (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) Any time there is blood in the stool, it shouldn't be ignored. Tell your friend to see the doctor ASAP & arrange payment plans with the doctor. In the meantime, have your friend buy some Mylanta chewable tablets (mint flavored) that will coat the tummy, help expel the gas, & make the tummy feel better, withihn an hour. Walking around a bit is best after chewing two at a time. If you have a Rite Aid drugstore nearby, they sell the same tablets that come in a bottle or in a box, that have the Rite Aid name on them. They work just as well!!!!!

ALL blood in the stool should be evaluated by a physician. No ifs, ands, or buts.

Speculation about constipation and internal hemorrhoids is inappropriate when there is no mention of either. Even blood believed to be the result of hemorrhoids should be investigated and the diagnosis confirmed.

An exam is imperative. There are many low- and no-cost resources available for those without health insurance.

Chances are it's not serious--but postponing care can cost a life---or life savings. It's not worth it.

While it's true that you can't change the behavior of others, you can change yours. You can step out of enabler role, and let her know that while you love her, you cannot support her when she is failing to take even the most minor steps to ensure her own well-being. It's a very hard step to take--but it could help save her life.
