Religion has certain ideas at the heart of it which are called sacred or holy or whatever. What it means is 'here is an idea or notion that you're not allowed to say anything bad about; you're just not. Why not? - because you're not.'

In any other aspect of human life, law, medicine, philosophy, science, politics, et al., respect is hard earned and can be lost or the status quo challenged.
But not religion. Religion excempts itself from challenge as well as taxes.
Why do you respect religion?

I do not respect religion. It's taken a lifetime of introspection and several different psychotherapists, but I've finally cured myself of giving religion the respect it doesn't deserve. The further I distance myself from religion, the better life gets.

Life will get even better when I no longer have to hide my atheism from my friends and neighbors because of my genuine fear of Christian intolerance.

The industry I work in respect is earned and not an automatic right.

Religion and religious types want to bully people into respect. Maybe it's time for the religions of the world to concentrate on doing good and living in peace and understanding like their "Gods" tells them to, then just maybe more people may start to take note and respect might start to grow.

Actually, religion does not exempt itself from taxes - our Constitution, which guarantees the separation of church and state, thus requires exemption because taxes could be used to control the church by approving some as a church and others as not a church.
And if you feel no one is allowed to say anything "bad" whatever that means, after defining it, you need to look at religious wars including the ones going on in Iraq (Shi'ite vs Sunni, not US vs Iraq) and elsewhere.
The problem with challenging religion is that it is based on faith so there are no facts to base a challenge on except their and your own beliefs. And people dream up exemptions like "Thou shalt not kill, except ...."

You misunderstand and neglect the spiritual and source
of all reality. Religion can get many things wrong as
can any effort we do, however, to exalt and search for
higher wisdom and understanding, that is the thing to
do to make life complete. Yes, some people can
be too dogmatic about certain things, yet there are
standards to uphold as well - it is a balance - be
reverent before God - that is the only chance you have!

I do and dont if you know what I mean.
I put my opinion forward wether people like it or not as it is your god given right to say what you think and not think what other people wants you to think.
god loves a questioner...trust me on this.
not someone who takes everthing for granted.
be yourself ask , question,, deduce,,decide.
the choice is yours no one else's.
and never let someone decide for you as it is a sign of weakness.
If you believe in god ...good if not you will through time..
forget about so called church leaders cause they know no more than you do...
most churches are only there for money.
they prey on peoples emotions..
then hand the plate out on a sunday and says please give generously.
I prefer giving direct to the hungry. anti-war, nature, etc.
you are the church not the building.

not all religions have that view i think if you challenge something that you fing wrong that is sacred, if you challenge something which is unjust that is holy, if you live your life as a whole being that is perfect, but that is my view i cant talk for other faith groups

Some people need it. Some people can't believe they will just die. Some need it to be happy... some need it for a sense of purpose. Either way its like kicking a little girls puppy to them if you say anything mean. Some of them are weak and need the belief. That's just life I'm afraid...

I am compelled by my own biting conscience to deeply respect religion, not only my own, but also a neighbouring alien one, as I would not like to risk to be burned at the stake, to lose my head, to be stoned to death, to be prevented from getting married to a wife who wants church or temple, to lose my job, to lose my friends, to be banned, to be excommunicated, to be cursed ...

It is my holy duty to learn to humbly tolerate those that might be judged intolerant and to show deepest respect towards a holy orthodox Faith that by imprudent impudent rebellious souls would be called a blind and murderous belief.

In this way I think and indeed hope that I may deserve to be loved more by God our Father Who is in Heaven. And also I believe that upon my death I will be received by a singing army of glorious Angels at the huge holy Gate of Paradise and from there triumphantly I will be accompanied unto God's ever glowing and perennially blissful nearness, and that is utmost beautiful for me.

Those who show no respect have a huge lot to risk on this Earth, in this Vale of Tears, and upon their death they will be stopped at Paradise's huge holy Gate by the diligent helpers of Saint Peter and so delivered into the firm hands of the nearby impatiently waiting helpers of ferocious merciless ever grinning Satan in order to be hurled down into the ever scorching flames of the Jehennah, or in perennially burning Hell's fire if you prefer.

So, to show deep respect is beautiful and safe and may get you high promotions, even if deeply in your heart or soul you may think that that respect is undeserved. Be astute! Be happy!
