The Marlin Model 60 semi-automatic is an excellent .22 rifle for someone starting out as their first rifle. I would like to make a suggestion to you based on experience.
Check out a Ruger 10-22 semi-automatic rifle. 10 Shot rotary magazine, also available in Stainless Steel. Today the Ruger is the pattern that all others follow. I sell Ruger 10-22's 10-1 over Marlin or any other brand in this price range. I am not putting down the Marlin by telling you this, as I own 1 myself so I think they are a great rifle..I just happen to think the Ruger is a much better rifle for money. Flawless functioning, quality manufacturing and warranty..Not to mention more barrels.stocks and accessories are available for the Ruger 10-22 than any other 22 rifle on the market today. Take the time to actually go to a local store and hold both in your hands and make up your own mind..I can bet which way you will go.Good Luck no matter what you buy! Happy Shooting and Welcome to the "Shooting" club.......

Nothing wrong with a Marlin 60, I have owned one for years. I don't shoot it much any more, but every time I think about getting rid of it I decide not to. I actually own a few .22 rifles and not a 10/22 in the bunch; but as a semi-automatic the Ruger 10/22 is the rifle you can never out grow. The MSRP for the standard is $250, but you should be able to find one cheaper. Look around and buy a used one, people actually get rid of them once in a while. Then you can accessorize to your heart's content. Drop in action parts are plentiful and actually not terribly expensive. It seems like everyone makes some sort of special stock for them. The same for barrels. I know guys that enjoy changing their 10/22s around so much you never know what it's going to look like the next time you see it. You can even sell the parts you've taken off to offset the price of your new ones. By the way, since you mentioned the 60SN I assume you like the scope package. I've had a couple of those in my lifetime and both the scopes are in a box and haven't seen the light of day for at least 15 years. A nice 4x32 or 4x40 (something in that range) will probably give you much better service.

I have to agree with Orion, the Marling M-39, in all its variants, is the very best .22 LR Lever-action Rifle ever to hit the market.
The M-60 is a good budget priced .22 LR Semi-Auto. The ones I've used have tended to be somewhat ammo finicky, and one or two were jammers. One had a tendency to go full auto after shooting a couple of boxes of ammo through them. It has been a number of years since I shot a Marlin M-60, so I really can't offer an informed opinion on current quality, other than to say that Marlin is traditionally a great value for the cost.
Overall, I have to agree with JD and others who recommended the Ruger M-10-22. I am of the opinion that it is the best .22 LR Semi-Auto on the market.

I have personally put 2-Marlin models sixties into their grave.
There is no finer 22 auto on the market! My latest has a simmons 3-9x40 scope on it, and is amazing! I have been repeatedly asked why I have a "deer rifle scope" on my gun, and after they shoot it, they understand! Easy to clean with the Gun Scrubber in a can, and match quality accuracy! Ruger 10/22 is too short, and personally i dont like them. The Marlin 39 or 39a, is a lever action 22 long rifle and is even more accurate than the model 60! I have also enjoyed the Marlin 882SSV, 22 mag. bolt action bull barrel. Marlin is the front runner in 22LR!

I bought my son the 60SB and my other son, the 22 Magnum bolt action. I would say the Marlin semi auto is somewhat tricky to disassemble. (I own a Ruger 10-22 and it has about 3 moving pieces) There is this long spring that always give me problems. But keep it clean and it has never had any problems. It is tube a tube feed and I really like the last shot keeps the chamber open.
How ever for fun, accuracy, and fire power. I live the .22 mag Bolt action. Ammo costs more. I have a very nice 4-10 X 40 scope on the mag. We can hit crows at over 100 yards and watch them explode.

I have a model 60, as do a couple of my friends. They are pretty accurate. Mine and an other are both older and you can only shoot 150-200 rounds before you have to clean it or you will start jamming. The other friend's is newer and works better. I have shot a bolt action Marlin that is absolutely a tack driver. I have been pretty pleased with my Marlin but my next semi-auto 22 will be a Ruger 10-22.

My first .22 was a Marlin Model 60 - got it when I was about 13. Dad made the mistake of getting me a semi-auto instead of a bolt rifle - and I could burn through a brick of ammo in no time. I won't make the same mistake with my son. He will learn to shoot slower and not cost me so much. BUT, I had many great times with that rifle, with minimal problems over the years except a worn out firing pin.

Instead of getting a Marlin 60, go for the Ruger 10/22. It's just about the same price, EXTREMELY easy to disassemble and clean, and is MUCH more customizable. Believe me, you'll be alot happier in the long run with a Ruger 10/22. Oh, and also, you can get 10, 25, 30, and even 50 round magazines for it. I bought mine at Wal Mart for only $200.00 and it also came with scope rings. Take it and you won't look back.
