My fav place is the Krazy Korner on Bourbon St. They have a variety of music different nights, from rock, blues, jazz. There is also a small courtyard on Bourbon St. (can't remember the name) that honors some of the great blues & jazz artists, where they have free live jazz, and a small cafe, as well. Just walk along thru the Quarter and follow the sounds that please you. They're easy to find.

You'll see as your walking around theres live music everywhere in the Quarter.. especially jazz and blues. .. day or night. If You are interested in dinner in a nice restaurant with live jazz music .. I recommend the Palm Court Cafe.. If you are over 40 .. hehe.. just b/c its a more sophisticated and pleasant... and the music has an older charm. Their live music starts at 8pm .. not sure what days though.

Heres a list of other restaurants and bars that have music. http://frenchquarter.com/directory.php If you plan to have dinner at one .. call ahead of time to make sure they really do have music.. and what time it starts.. this website isn't always 100% accurate
As for bars.. well course .. theres Bourbon St.
Heres a few websites to some of the bars and clubs

http://www.bourbonstreetsd.com/ (if you're open minded enough .. this can be quite interesting lol)
Bourbon Street is quite active and much of the *party scene*
.. if thats not your kind of thing .. check out Frenchmen Street.
Just ask your hotel or any local how to get to it. Its in the French Quarter but you'll need a short inexpensive cab ride from Bourbon. Frenchmen street is where the locals prefer to go. Its mellow but still lively.
Good Luck

Walk down Frenchmen Street any night of the week and just walk in anywhere that the music sounds good. Spotted Cat has a lot of good jazz bands, so does Blue Nile and Cafe Brasil.
