I'm passionate about learning languages, I'm in 2nd year in college, English is my first language and I'm fluent in Japanese and Spanish (from high school and childhood). I'm already planning on taking Chinese starting next year. But, I need to decide between German and Arabic. Both are pretty big in terms of U.S. relations. My mom's from Germany, and I've been there and really liked it. I figure German's a little easier to learn, but which do you think is more valuable and better to learn in a school situation? Challenge of the language isn't a big deal to me, I think my mind was made to learn languages. So I'm more interested in what is more useful now. Thanks.

Arabic is useful because not too many people in America speak it. The government always needs to employ people who can help them in this area.

German is easier because English is related to it. And your mum could help you.

Learn both of them!

Learn German if you: would really like to be able to talk to German relatives or if you plan on visiting Germany anytime soon. It's a much more free-flow language than Arabic.

Learn Arabic if you: think you'd like a job in translating or other job-related fields.

Good luck in deciding! I learned Cantonese for fun and Japanese for work!

I think in American School that German will be more useful because there might be more German exchange students than there are Arabic exchange student but in the real world most companies are now looking for more outrageous languages like Arabic. So in conclusion for School reasons- German. For business reasons- Arabic more likely but German is also impressive.

Arabic is probably more difficult, I'd want to learn that first, while I'm younger and have a better capacity. You can learn German anywhere, anytime.
