So if someone is caught knowlingly harboring a lawbreaker who is a US citizen. They are punishable by law. So why is it that churches can knowingly harbor illegal immigrants who are trying to avoid deportation, and the church isn't punishable by law?

CHARITY G - So if I break into someone's house and steal money and food to feed my family. Then it would be ok to seek sanctuary at a church to avoid being arrested? After all, I just broke the law to make mine and my family's life better right?

Church's have no legal authority to shelter anyone but in communities politicians know that to act out against a church could prove political suicide,so in many cases pressure is put on the police to take a more passive approach to the situation,it is wrong for churches to give sanctuary to law breakers traditionally it was granted to people who were in danger for their lives.

I thought the purpose of a sanctuary church was to give time to be assured they received a fair trial since many times people would want kill someone before law enforcement or whatever the judicial system was, could get there. Not as a hide out to keep from the punishment of the law.

It's something that in my life I have never heard happen here. If it was our "custom" I'm sure the churches would be filled to the brim with criminals avoiding their sentence. Hit the church and your free and clear? Don't think so.

I believe they should be punished for aiding and harboring a criminal. We have separation of church and state and churches are not a hide out.

Heck......for the religious ones.....even some of the disciples spent time in prison for things that wouldn't seem "fair" or "right"......but it was the law and God wasn't telling them that they didn't have to suffer the consequences of their actions. I thought it was said to obey the laws of the land.....not just the ones you feel like. It might be ok to stand up against things you don't feel are right but I never read one word that said you wouldn't have to pay the cost for that. Right, wrong or indifferent ,or that a church could be used as a means to hide people out from whatever the justice system in that land is. Heck.....Christ was crucified unfairly. All immigration is doing is sending people back home that are here illegally. They aren't lining them up against a wall and killing them.

Romans 13 is a Chapter they must have missed and the individual minister prosecuted, if it not to preserve human life...there is a difference in what they are doing and what Christians like Corry Ten Boom and her family did to protect lives during World War 2.

NO CHURCH OR POLITICAL MINORITY IN AMERICA IS GOING TO FORCE AMERICAN CITIZENS TO BOW DOWN TO THE DEMANDS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN OUR COUNTRY!!!

Jesus did not run and hide when the legal authorities of His day came to arrest Him. The disciples all proved, one by one, their faith and trust in the Lord by allowing themselves to be martyred in His name. ALSO, what about the Christians ALL OVER THE WORLD today who are being mistreated, abused and sometimes killed for their faith?

The churches are exceeding their authority and calling by aiding and abetting what is considered criminals in America because they refuse to follow our laws.

Each of these guilty churches should be judged for their crimes and suffer the consequences. And you churches and members will be judged by a higher power for misleading these illegals into thinking that it is OK for them to break laws.

No, because it would be the pastor generally doing it. If my pastor did it I would start a petition to have him fired. You don't get rid of a church due to one person's crime.

that my friend is one problem that we need to fix any church that does so should have its status as exempt recalled and taxed to the hilt since it is knowingly breaking the law itself and by doing so throws its hat into the political arena and hence is not any longer keeping out of government affairs

Safe harbor is a tradition in churches dating back hundreds if not thousands of years . . . It's a custom . . . like offering your seat to an elderly person . . . or holding the door for women with small children . . . a nicety. It's a hold over from when Europe was under the rule of the Holy Roman Church.
