Your friend is doing the right thing getting releases. They provide notice to the cheerleaders of the risks of the sport and may also provide you some protections if someone is hurt. Would be good to get everyone to sign one - the teachers, spotters, participants, etc.

It is not realistic for her to buy insurance for her squad. However, she may be covered by the church's insurance, especially if the church already has sports leagues.

A waiver or release is the intentional and voluntary act of relinquishing something, such as a known right to sue a person, educational institution, or organization for an injury. Release of liability is basically an agreement that allows an individual or business to release liability arising from any event in consideration for an asset or cash payment. The legal areas that come under this agreement include real estate, labor and employment, immigration, security and finance, business operations and more. Waivers and releases are commonly used by the sponsor of an event and schools when competitors, students, faculty, or visitors participate in a private or institution-sponsored activity.

A waiver and release of liability is worthless. Your friend should buy a general liability policy.

The required signatures should come from the person participating and the legal guardians. If the parents are separated or divorced it must come from the one with primary custody.
